How to clean pleated blinds

Would you like your somewhat dusty and grey-looking pleated blinds to look radiant again?

Would you like your somewhat dusty and grey-looking pleated blinds to look radiant again? Maybe you are afraid to clean them, as you worry they might discolour or damage. In this blog, we explain how to clean your pleated blinds safely and effectively.

The honeycomb structure of your pleated blinds obviously looks amazing. It is good insulation and it looks great. But when it comes to trapping dust, the cellular structure is a little less advantageous, as dirt tends to get trapped inside. Now and then you need to give your pleated blind a facelift by giving them a thorough clean. Fortunately, this is not as complicated as it looks!

With the 2 step-by-step plans below - one for dusting your blinds and one for removing stains – you will be able to make your window decoration spotless and shine like new again!

A dust-free pleated blind in 5 steps

Removing dust from your pleated blind is easily done in five steps:

  1. Open your pleated blind fully. In other words, lower it all the way down.
  2. Blow into the cells to remove the coarse dust. When doing so, close your eyes if necessary to avoid irritation.
  3. Grab a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a soft, small brush head.
  4. Dust or vacuum (very carefully, on the very lowest setting) from top to bottom.
  5. Removed all the dust? If you can reach the back, repeat steps 1 to 4 on the other side of the curtain.

Clean and stain-free pleated blinds in 5 steps

Is just dusting not enough? And are the dirty, unsightly stains on your pleated curtain driving you nuts? To give your curtain a thorough stain treatment, follow the 5 steps below:

  1. Read the cleaning instructions of your pleated blinds and be mindful of specific directions or exceptions. As every pleated blind consists of different materials, the cleaning methods may differ from one blind to another.
  2. Does your pleated blind have specific cleaning instructions? Please follow the directions  and abandon this step-by-step plan.
  3. No specifics? Then grab a non-static microfibre cloth (not one of those yellow household towels, as they leave behind yellow plush) and moisten it lightly with water. Do not use detergents.
  4. With the slightly damp cloth, dab very gently on the stained spot. Be careful not to rub; as this will only make the stain worse.
  5. In between dabbing, regularly clean/moisten the cloth and continue until the stain has disappeared. Thoroughly but carefully dry your pleated blinds.

Having pleated blinds cleaned by a specialist

Are you unable to clean your pleated blinds yourself? Or did that stubborn stain not come out despite dabbing for ages? Consider having your pleated blinds cleaned by a specialised cleaning company. A Google search will often provide you with many good options.
